Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust (AWP) provides inpatient and community-based mental health care for people living in Bath and North East Somerset (B&NES), Bristol, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Swindon and Wiltshire. We also provide specialist services extending throughout the south west.

We employ over 4,000 dedicated members of staff who deliver services from more than 90 locations, working in approximately 150 teams across a geographical region of 2,200 miles, for a population of approximately 1.8million people.

We are passionate about promoting good mental health and wellbeing. We strive to use the expertise and resources within our organisation, and through our partnerships, to deliver high quality services that are safe and focused on people's recovery. Our staff are pivotal in everything we do and we are committed to involving them fully in the development of the Trust and our services.

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Psychiatrist with the North Wiltshire Intensive Service and Wiltshire & Swindon Place of Safety, Bluebell Unit. This is a full time post, 10 PAs per week. This is a new post as a result of service changes.

Wiltshire is a beautiful county of chalk plains with eight White Horse chalk figures on hillsides, river valleys, ancient monuments and world heritage sites including Avebury and Stonehenge. The post holder will be based at Green Lane Hospital, Devizes which is at the heart of Wiltshire.

The Intensive service provides daily, 24 hour rapid assessment and treatment for those in crisis. The Intensive service is the `gate keeping’ and discharging agent for Inpatient services. It is currently located at Green Lane Hospital, Devizes, next to the Inpatient Unit.

Service users are referred when in crisis or experiencing deterioration in their mental health. The team works closely with carers to support recovery at home. Multiple daily visits can be offered to support home treatment to a wide range of mental health diagnoses and also supports people who are in an adjustment phase after experiencing a significant life crisis.

AWP have commissioned a Swindon and Wiltshire Place of Safety (PoS). The service will provide a flexible 4 space unit for the East of the Trust. The suite will provide the ability to accept those detained under sec 135 & 136 for a mental health assessment.

The service is provided by a dedicated specialist multi-disciplinary mental health team, who are experienced in the management of people with mental health problems who are in crisis. They are based within the Bluebell Unit (health based POS) which is located on the Green Lane Hospital site.

The post holder will be responsible for carrying out MHA assessments within the POS on behalf of Swindon & Wiltshire two days per week (4 PA). The cover for both the POS and the Intensive Service will be shared with a second full time consultant.

Devizes has a weekly Academic programme with outside speakers. In addition there is a monthly PDP group and Peer Supervision. CPD activities are supported. The applicant would be expected to participate.

Medical students from Bristol University are placed at Green Lane Hospital and therefore teaching opportunities might be available if this would be of interested.
